Adults with disabilities continue to face significant barriers to employment. While approximately 76% of adults without disabilities are employed, the employment rate for adults with disabilities is just 26%. Many local students with disabilities graduate from high school eager to work but with limited opportunities to gain the experience employers often require. Families frequently report difficulty finding businesses willing to provide volunteer or training opportunities, even when job coaches and supports are available.

Recognizing this need, a group of community members came together in 2017 with a shared vision: to create meaningful pathways to employment for adults with disabilities. Their mission was simple yet ambitious—to establish a downtown business that would provide real-world job training, skill development, and employment opportunities while embracing individuals of all abilities.

After consulting local business leaders, workforce development professionals, educators, and families, the group determined that a nonprofit model would best support this mission. The vision soon evolved into a plan to open an inclusive training café in Historic Downtown Wilson, where individuals could gain valuable workplace experience in a supportive environment while serving the community.

Inspired by feedback from local businesses and residents, the concept for WhirliDogs Café was born. The menu would feature “Out-of-the-Box” hotdogs, homemade soups, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, fresh salads, and creative ice cream treats. The name “WhirliDogs” pays tribute to Wilson’s iconic Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park, celebrating both the creativity of our community and the unique talents of the individuals we serve.

Today, WhirliDogs Café is more than a restaurant. It is a place where opportunity, inclusion, and community come together—one teammate, one customer, and one success story at a time.
